COMPOSITION :

Each Capsule contains:
Active: Ascorbic acid 500 mg Inactive:
Beeswax. Microcrystalline Cellulose. Stearic acid

PHARMACEUTICAL FORM :

Hard gelatin capsule

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION :

Ascorbic acid is reversibly oxidized to dehydroascorbic add in the body. These : two forms of the vitamin C are believed to be important in oxidation reductions which is involved in numerous
enzymatic reactions and is the basis of the spectrum of action of vitamin C.

 PHARMACOKINETICS :

each capsule of C-retard contains vitamin C retard pellets, which slowly release vitamin c
This leads to high and constant concentration of blood levels

Absorption:
The ascorbic add is first absorbed in the upper segment of the small intestines via active transportation

Distribution:
Vitamin C is distributed in all body tissues.

Metabolism:
Ascorbic acid is partially metabolized into dehydroascorbic add and oxalic acid afterwards.

Elimination:
Elimination is mainly through the kidneys (1-3 gram per day)

Common cold prophylaxis

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION :

Adults and adolescent over 12 years: The recommended dose is 1 to 2 capsules once daily. Generally, one capsule per day is sufficient To treat infectious disease: 2 capsules daily

CONTRA-INDICATIONS :

Hypersensitivity to the active ingrediants or any of the excipients.
C-retard should not be used in the presence of nephrolithiasis, in patients with uremia and hemochromatosis

SIDE EFFECTS :

C-retard capsule is well tolerated unlike other vitamin C preparations, it does not produce Oxalluria or oxalate renal stone formation and is therefore, well tolerated in renal patients. High doses may cause diarrhea or diuresis.

DRUG INTERACTION :

Oral contraceptives decrease Vitamin C.
Calcitonin leads to greater consumption of vitamin C.
The salicylates inhibit active transport through the intestinal wall.
Tetracyline inhibits the metabolism and intracellular tubular reabsorbtion.
Acetyl salicylic acid, barbiturates and tetracycline increase the urinary excretion of vitamin C. Corticosteroid increase or decrease oxidation of Vitamin C

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION :

There is no evidence of a risk during pregnancy and lactation when the recommended doses are met. Also, C-retard may be taken during pregnancy and lactation

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS :

Vitamin C can contribute to an increase in iron absorption. So caution should be taken in haemochromatosis also certain pathologic disease as Thalasemia.

STORAGE :

Store in a temperature not exceeding 300 C in a dry place.
Keep out of the reach of children.

INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS :

C-retard does not affect the ability to drive or operate machines.
Taking high doses of C-retard can occasionally cause mild diarrhea and diuretic effect.
